Is closed-cell foam the right insulation for my Sparks house?
Closed-cell foam insulation is a dense, rigid spray foam that insulates, stops drafts and blocks moisture in one coat, and at Complete Sparks Insulation Services we use it on Sparks homes where all three matter. It's rated about R-6 per inch, and R-value is just how well insulation slows heat, so a thin layer does a lot of work.
Most calls for foam start with a cold floor over the crawl space, a room over the garage that won't hold heat, or a power bill that keeps climbing. Foam costs more than other insulation because it seals air while it insulates, and in a lot of attics sealing the gaps and topping up the loose fill does the job for less, unless your ductwork runs up there. Price comes down to how much area we cover, how thick the foam goes and how much prep the space needs, and the schedule turns on that prep and on when your household can be away from the house. You get your own number at the estimate, when I look at the space in person.
How we put in closed-cell foam insulation
I start by looking over the space for anything foam would seal in, like a roof leak, wet wood or old wiring, because those get fixed first or the foam just hides the problem. Closed cell is hard to take back out once it's in, so we take our time with prep, pulling out old insulation that's soaked or full of droppings, cleaning the framing and masking off everything nearby. Before we spray a wall, we talk through with you how that wall will dry, and then our crew sprays in passes so the edges and corners get the same depth as the middle. We clean up, and you come back after the re-entry time, which is the wait before it's safe to be inside again.
Closed cell isn't the only foam we spray. Where you don't need a moisture block, like the underside of a roof deck, open-cell foam insulation is softer, lighter and usually costs less. Landlords and property managers also call us for commercial insulation on rental buildings, shops and offices, and the same prep rules apply there.
What changes a closed-cell foam job in Sparks
The City of Sparks keeps a list of small jobs that don't need a permit, like patching less than 100 square feet of stucco or drywall, and the list also names windows, but it doesn't name foam insulation, so it doesn't settle whether your job needs one. Before work starts, we check with the city or county office for your address, tell you what it asks for and take care of the permit when your job needs one. We're based in Sparks and work across the Reno and Sparks area and the cities around it, so we check the same way on jobs in Reno and Carson City, and if you don't see your city, just ask.
The city lists seismic design category D2, a rating for earthquake loads, among its design rules, and closed-cell foam in a framed wall makes that wall a lot stiffer against sideways push. A lot of the houses we see here have a crawl space or a room over the garage, and that's usually where foam earns its cost.

How much does closed-cell spray foam cost in the Reno area?
Closed-cell spray foam in the Reno area usually costs about $1 to $1.50 per board foot, and a board foot is one square foot of foam one inch thick. That's the going rate around here, not our quote, so your total depends on how much area gets covered and how thick it goes. When you compare bids, make sure they use the same area and thickness, or you're comparing different jobs.
How long do we have to stay out of the house after spray foam insulation?
Plan to be out during the install and for at least 24 hours after it, which is what Consumer Product Safety Commission staff advise. Book a place for the whole household to stay before the install date, and we'll go over the safety steps with you ahead of time so you know when it's time to come back.
Is spray foam safe for someone with asthma or allergies?
Some people should look harder before choosing it, because the same CPSC staff say anyone with asthma, respiratory allergies, a skin condition or an earlier reaction to isocyanates, a chemical used in the foam, should review the product information carefully. If that's someone in your house, tell me at the estimate, and if it's a real concern we'll talk about another type of insulation instead.
Does closed-cell foam trap moisture in walls?
It can keep a wall from drying outward, because at the usual thickness closed-cell foam is a vapor retarder, a layer that slows moisture, so a frame wall filled with it won't dry well to the outside. On a wall retrofit, we settle with you how that wall will handle moisture before any foam goes in, and any leak gets fixed first.
How do I check if an insulation contractor is licensed in Sparks?
You can search licenses by license number or company name on the Sparks building permits page. The city points out that a contractor licensed by the State of Nevada isn't necessarily licensed in Sparks, so check the city as well as the state.
What happens if spray foam is installed wrong?
It's hard to fix, because CPSC staff note there's no standard way to remove misapplied spray foam, and tearing it out the wrong way, especially with heat, might create dust or hazardous materials. That's why it pays to choose your installer carefully, and why we spend our time on prep before the first pass. Our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
